Mersea is an island in the Blackwater and Colne Estuaries. Its name comes from the Old English word meresig, meaning "island of the pool". Mersea Island is just 9 miles East of Colchester Essex, which is famous for its Norman castle with it’s fantastic park and one of Europe’s finest zoos.
Mersea Island is the most easterly inhabited island in the UK and it can be reached by crossing the strood causeway (this can flood with high tides so please check the tides time link below)
The beaches are made up of shingle and sand and are wonderful for relaxing walks, open air swimming and exhilarating water sports.
Mersea Island is steeped with history, as the island has been inhabited since pre-Roman times and it is also known as the hidden gem amongst tourists. It has so much to offer for couples and family alike, with it’s beautiful walks along the estuary and through the quintessentially English village to its water sports including sailing, boat trips and crabbing.
It has a fantastic range of places to eat including the famous ‘Company Shed’ and with its abundance of coffee shops you will never go hungry. You may want to source local produce from the village shops which you will find are full of interesting items.
