How it Began
A hobby may just be a pleasurable activity to pass the time; however, in this case it turned out to be the activity to prepare us for our current endeavour.
Ann has been involved in the world of property since she was 18: In New homes she’d organise the show homes as well as sell them, this career led to managing her own estate agency. It was an excellent platform to find out what people base their buying decisions on, what their tastes are, what type of interior design works and how people react to different arrangements. Of course, it also gave Ann a fantastic knowledge in the field of business management and customer service. The first project Ann describes as serious ‘upcycling’ was a hall table. “One table in a furniture store caught my eye, but it was just too expensive. And then, one day, David’s mum (David’s my partner) gave us a table and said we could paint it. When we did I was thinking ‘yes, I may do some more of this’.
Labour of love
ShabbyAnd... was born. Trading began in March 2013, firstly online and then through word of mouth and vintage fairs. As the demand grew, Ann realised there was a need for ShabbyAnd… to have a physical presence. Ann gave up the housing market to commit more time to it and the shop came to life.
Ann says “All of our items are carefully hand painted and may show the odd brush stroke or colour variation. As with any pre- owned furniture there may be the odd blemish or bump that you'd expect with age, this is part of its attraction and if like us and you love vintage pieces with character this is the place for you.”
Premises were found in August with the Grand Opening in September 2013.
Today ShabbyAnd… is on a road to becoming the destination for chic upcycled furniture, unique, retro accessories and quality paints and materials. Having also been featured in “Essex Life” Magazine and seen on “60 Minute Make Overs with Peter Andre” gaining a stellar reputation.
The shop is also the 1st in the UK to be an authorised Platinum distributor of Autentico chalk paints and unique to many shops as we are able to mix the range on site.
Inspiration in store
All of our creations are brought back to life in the shop.
When you visit us on West Mersea, you may find us deliberating over a finish colour for a recently reclaimed armchair or table etc. ShabbyAnd… create unique designs from reclaimed materials but often work on commissions directly for homeowners or for interior designers looking for unique pieces to help them put an individual stamp on spaces they create for their clients.
Ann also offers colour consultation sessions to help those who struggle for inspiration and she can have the correct colour mixed up using our “Magical Mixing Machine” which ensures we will always have the correct colour in stock of the only paint that has 35% chalk in it.
Ann’s desire was to create a platform not only to channel her own creativity, but to share the appreciation of ‘the exceptional’ with the local community. The shop is a display of local talent at its best. Our furniture is upcycled on site, the accessories and gifts come from carefully chosen companies. You can also find us at a selection of the local shows and festivals.
Shabby And… is also the home of paint workshops, where you can share our expertise on how to combine the best techniques and materials using Autentico chalk paints and have a wonderful experience at the same time.

After some trial and error with said leaders in the chalk paint market, I came across Autentico. Not only was their chalk paint superior to all others I had tried, they represented everything I believe in; environmentally friendly, VOC safe (don’t you hate fumes and the smell of rooms after it’s been painted) and also child safe. Nonetheless, Autentico believe as I do on superior quality products for customers.
When I paint something, it is my reputation on the line so I ensure I only look for the best quality products for you. Autentico has not only performed in superior furniture paints, they have taken the time to create a vast range of products that service your whole house, not just interior walls but exterior also.
So that I can also offer the whole range, a few years ago I decided to become the main stockist of Autentico’s full range allowing you that one stop shop experience – whether that be by phone, email, visits to you or coming into our shop and workshop.
